.Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS) Borokiri, Port Harcourt, on Saturday officially commissioned its newly renovated tennis court in a colourful ceremony attended by senior naval Officers, alumni, government officials, parents and members of the school community.
The event marked not only the unveiling of a modern sporting facility, but also a celebration of partnership, community support and the school’s commitment to the holistic development of students.
In her welcome address, the Commandant of NNSS Borokiri, Captain Khadija Musa, described the project as another milestone in the school’s quest for excellence. She noted that education extends beyond academics, stressing that sports play a critical role in building discipline, confidence, leadership qualities and teamwork.
Captain Musa expressed confidence that the upgraded tennis court would give students opportunities to discover and nurture sporting talent while promoting healthy lifestyles and positive values. She also appreciated alumni and stakeholders for their contributions to improving the school’s learning environment.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of distinguished alumnus, Mr. Gaius O. Usoh, Chairman of the Occasion, whose generosity made the project possible. Through his company, CTRL System Technologies Nigeria Limited, Mr. Usoh fully funded and executed the renovation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Gaius O Usoh said his decision to undertake the project was inspired by his desire to give back to the institution that shaped his future. He urged fellow alumni to remain connected to their alma mater and support initiatives that positively impact future generations.
The Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral C.D. Okehie, represented by the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Commodore M.I. Raji, commended the school management, alumni and stakeholders for their dedication to youth development.
He described the project as a valuable investment in the future of young Nigerians and encouraged students to combine use of the facility with academic excellence.
Also speaking, the President-General of the Nigerian Navy Secondary Schools Alumni Association, praised Mr Gaius O. Usoh’s contribution and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting developmental projects across Nigerian Navy Secondary Schools nationwide.
Beyond the commissioning, guests were treated to an exhibition of household products produced by students under the school’s Skills Acquisition Training Programme.
The display showcased the creativity, practical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills being developed alongside formal education.
The exhibition attracted admiration from visitors, many of whom described the initiative as a practical approach to preparing young people for life beyond the classroom. Observers noted that the programme reflects the school’s commitment to equipping students with vocational and entrepreneurial skills that promote innovation, self-reliance and productivity.

Among the dignitaries present were former Director of Naval Education, Commodore I.A. Ahmed; former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, Professor Teddy Charles Adias; Rivers State Commissioner for Special Projects, Mr. Tonye Bellgam; senior naval officers, PTA representatives, alumni members and other invited guests.
The ceremony culminated in the formal commissioning of the tennis court, a symbolic exhibition match, inspection of the facility and presentation of tennis rackets and balls to support sporting activities in the school
For many attendees, the occasion demonstrated the impact of collaboration between alumni, school authorities and stakeholders. It also reinforced NNSS Borokiri’s vision of producing students who are academically sound, physically fit, morally upright and equipped with practical skills to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.
