The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA )has partnered with Interferry, a global ferry body with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization, to launch Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme aimed at improving safety standards on Lagos waterways.

In a statement released in Lagos on Monday, LASWA said the program is expected to strengthen ferry operations, address safety gaps, and improve professionalism across the sector.
The 18-month initiative will bring together local operators and international experts. Participants will receive mentorship from Interferry specialists, alongside input from Nigerian maritime institutions, industry players, and regulators.
LASWA explained that participants were carefully selected after a screening process concluded on March 18, 2026.
Fifty participants have been enrolled, including ferry captains, engineers, safety Officers, and fleet managers. Training will cover areas such as vessel design, safety systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance practices.
The programme will run on a hybrid model, combining online learning, virtual mentoring, and monthly practical sessions to ensure hands-on exposure.
It is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the LASWA headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, with stakeholders expected at the launch for briefings and introductions.
LASWA said the initiative reflects the Lagos State Government’s push to improve safety on the waterways and build a more professional ferry transport system.
