The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully concluded a five-day Water Hyacinth Recycling Training Program, empowering 50 women and young people in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe in Lagos.
This initiative, which took place from January 19 to 23, 2026, was a collaborative effort with Mitimeth, a social enterprise.
The program aimed to equip participants with hands-on skills to transform invasive water hyacinth into innovative and marketable products, addressing pollution while creating new economic opportunities.
According to the statement signed by the LASWA Management, the training was designed to spark creativity and environmental responsibility among the participants.
The program provided a comprehensive curriculum, covering techniques in harvesting, processing, and recycling water hyacinth, as well as sessions on safety practices, entrepreneurship, and sustainable environmental care.
This initiative aligns with LASWA’s commitment to pioneering solutions that enhance waterway safety, protect ecosystems, and uplift local communities. The training program featured lively demonstrations and personalized mentorship from Mitimeth, ensuring that participants could immediately apply their new skills.
The trainees showcased beautifully crafted recycled products and shared exciting plans to form cooperatives and micro-enterprises, paving the way for lasting economic empowerment.
Hon. Monsuru Akinloye, the Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, praised LASWA for bringing this impactful program to the community, recognizing its potential to reduce water hyacinth problems while empowering women and youth with valuable skills.
LASWA has already trained over 450 women and young people across Lagos’s riverine areas and aims to continue fostering sustainable livelihoods and stronger environmental stewardship.
The authority’s dedication to managing and developing Lagos’s inland waterways, ensuring safe navigation, environmental health, and economic growth, is reflected in initiatives like the Water Hyacinth Recycling Training Program.
