The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has cancelled its planned protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled for today, January 20, 2026. The party cited concerns that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums and political rivals, leading to disorder.
According to the party’s statement, the NNPP prioritized Nigeria’s peace and unity over its quest for justice. The statement, signed by NNPP’s Founder and Chairman Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, read: “We are law-abiding citizens and our pursuit of justice will always prioritize the peace and unity of Nigeria”
The NNPP had announced the protest on January 10 to press for INEC to recognize its authentic leadership, led by Dr. Agbo Major. The party expressed disappointment with INEC’s continued disregard for court orders directing the commission to recognize the Major-led leadership.
The Abia High Court and the Federal Capital Territory High Court Abuja had instructed INEC to stop dealing with the Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso-led group pending the outcome of the ongoing judicial review.
The NNPP emphasized that the issue is not a leadership crisis, but rather the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding between the party and the Kwankwasiya Movement led by Kwankwaso.
The party urged its members to remain calm, assuring them that their grievances would be resolved soon. The NNPP remains committed to seeking justice through lawful means, hoping that the issues surrounding its leadership recognition will be resolved soon, and justice will prevail.
The NNPP’s decision to cancel the protest demonstrates its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria. The party’s leadership has been navigating internal tensions and disagreements over party leadership.
The NNPP has also written to INEC and the Inspector General of Police, disowning the Kwankwasiya and TNM groups, further emphasizing its commitment to resolving internal issues.
