The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah , has called on maritime journalists to uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism and accuracy in their reportage, stressing that responsible journalism remains essential to the growth and development of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Dr. Akutah made the call when the newly inaugurated executive members of the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN), led by its President, Mr. Yinka Onigbinde, paid a courtesy visit to the Council’s headquarters in Lagos.

Welcoming the delegation, the NSC chief praised MARAN for its consistent role in keeping stakeholders and the public informed about developments in the maritime sector. He described the media as a strategic partner in promoting transparency, accountability and public confidence in government policies and reforms.

He said the Council values its longstanding relationship with maritime journalists and acknowledged their contributions to the industry’s growth through credible and balanced reporting.

According to him, the responsibility of journalists goes beyond reporting daily events. He noted that the media helps shape public opinion, educates citizens on critical national issues and serves as an important watchdog that promotes accountability and institutional development.

Dr. Akutah urged members of MARAN to remain committed to truth, fairness and factual reporting while guarding against misinformation and protecting the confidentiality of reliable sources. He said ethical journalism would continue to inspire confidence among industry stakeholders and support ongoing efforts to improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s ports.

The NSC boss also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, describing the move as a major milestone that has given the maritime sector a clearer strategic direction, attracted increasing investor interest and strengthened its role in national economic development.

He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to working closely with the media to create greater awareness of reforms and initiatives aimed at improving port operations, facilitating trade and enhancing the ease of doing business in the country.

Dr. Akutah thanked maritime journalists for their continued support over the years, expressing confidence that stronger collaboration between the Council and the media would further advance the development of the maritime sector.

Earlier, MARAN President, Mr. Yinka Onigbinde, commended Dr. Akutah for his leadership and commitment to reforms in the maritime industry.
