Bonny Gas Transport Limited (BGT), the shipping subsidiary of Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), has awarded contracts for the construction of three new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to Chinese shipbuilding firms Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and China Shipbuilding Trading Company.
The new vessels are part of BGT’s fleet renewal programme, aimed at boosting operational efficiency and supporting NLNG’s long-term growth strategy.
According to the company, each vessel will have a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic metres and will be fitted with advanced X-DF propulsion technology, which enhances fuel efficiency and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to older vessel designs.
The LNG carriers are expected to be delivered in 2029 and will be chartered by NLNG. They will be managed by NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML), the company’s maritime services subsidiary.
BGT described the development as a major milestone in its efforts to modernise its fleet and position its operations for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
The vessels are designed to meet evolving international and European Union emissions regulations while supporting NLNG’s goal of maintaining its Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 Level 5 rating.
The company added that the newbuild vessels will strengthen its capacity to deliver LNG efficiently to global markets, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and the supply of cleaner energy worldwide.
