The Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation (NPSI), sponsored by Nigeria LNG (NLNG), has received a record 237 entries for its 2026 edition, marking a significant increase in participation as the adjudication process officially begins.

The organisers made this known at a hand-over-of-entries press briefing held on Thursday, where the submissions were formally presented to the Advisory Board and judging panel.

The figure represents a notable rise from the 112 entries received in 2025, reflecting renewed interest driven by expanded outreach and stakeholder engagement efforts across the country.

Speaking at the event in Lagos, Dr. Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, said the growth in submissions reflects deliberate efforts to broaden awareness of the Prize.

She explained that the initiative, which focuses on innovations in Artificial Intelligence, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and digital technologies for development, continues to uphold strict standards of excellence rather than prioritising quantity.

Dr. Horsfall also referenced last year’s decision not to confer the award, describing it as a difficult but necessary step taken to preserve the credibility and integrity of the Prize.

In his remarks, Professor Bart Nnaji, Chairman of the Advisory Board, reaffirmed that the selection process remains independent, transparent, and strictly merit-based. He noted that the absence of a winner in the previous cycle underscored the Prize’s commitment to excellence, adding that the strong response this year reflects growing confidence within the scientific and innovation community.

With the entries now officially handed over, the Advisory Board and panel of judges have commenced a detailed evaluation process. According to the organisers, the adjudication will involve rigorous assessment, testing, and professional deliberation before final decisions are announced in the coming months.

Established in 2004, the Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation carries a $100,000 award and remains one of Africa’s leading platforms for recognising and promoting scientific and technological advancement.
