The Ocean Ambassadors Foundation joined forces with the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to celebrate the International Day of Women in Maritime. The event, held in Lagos, focused on promoting female participation in the maritime industry.
Hon. Olaitan Williams, President of the Ocean Ambassadors Foundation, highlighted the gender gap in the maritime sector in her opening remarks. She emphasized the need for greater inclusion and opportunities for women in this traditionally male-dominated field.
Representing Women in Logistics and Transport (WILAT), Princess Margaret Inam noted the organization’s global reach, now present in 38 countries. She recounted the origins of WILAT, which started in 2010 when a small group of women in logistics and transport sought to create a dedicated arm for female professionals. Since then, WILAT has grown significantly, providing training, mentorship, and networking opportunities for women in the sector.
Addressing the gathering on behalf of the absent chairperson, Princess Inam expressed gratitude to NIMASA’s Director General for supporting WILAT and acknowledged the alignment of WILAT’s mission with this year’s theme, “Safe Horizons, Women Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety.” She stressed the importance of women being well-trained and prepared to shape the industry.
Princess Inam detailed WILAT’s commitment to education and empowerment through their annual event held every last Thursday of July. This event includes presentations on various industry topics, providing participants with valuable knowledge and insights. She emphasized the significance of training, networking, inclusion, and mentorship, which are central to WILAT’s activities.
WILAT also focuses on developing the next generation of maritime professionals by engaging with students from institutions such as Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG). The organization sponsors students to attend international conferences, offering them mentorship and exposure to the industry.
In conclusion, Princess Inam outlined WILAT’s core principles: Leadership, Mentorship, Entrepreneurship, Empowerment, and Social Responsibility.
