In a significant crackdown on illegal importation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), led by Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, announced the interception of twelve containers of illicit goods at the Onne Port, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) totaling ₦31.2 billion. The seizures, revealed at a press conference held in September 2024, underscore rising concerns over national security breaches at the port.
Among the confiscated items were military camouflage boots, large quantities of codeine-laced cough syrup, tramadol, and other dangerous pharmaceuticals. The seized goods highlight a disturbing trend of criminals exploiting Nigeria’s pro-trade policies to smuggle harmful items into the country. Comptroller-General Adeniyi emphasized the critical nature of these seizures, noting that the NCS will now implement emergency protocols at the port, including more stringent container inspections.
The operation was made possible through intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and thorough inspections. Adeniyi commended the officers of the Area 2 Command for their vigilance, reiterating the Customs Service’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s security while ensuring that legitimate trade activities continue smoothly.
The confiscated pharmaceuticals will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action. Adeniyi also called on the public to assist with intelligence on smuggling activities, pledging to continue efforts to protect Nigeria’s borders from illegal imports.
