In a significant move to bolster maritime security, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, visited the NIMASA C4i Center in Kirikiri Lagos last weekend. His visit was aimed at exploring the integration of the C4i system with the Nigerian Navy’s Falcon Eye surveillance system to enhance security measures in Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Minister Matawalle emphasized the critical need for a cohesive strategy between the Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to safeguard the country’s waters. “All we need is to secure our maritime domain,” he stated.
“The Navy and NIMASA must work together to ensure we achieve the desired results. By integrating Falcon Eye and C4i, we can improve communication and coordination to effectively address any clashes and apprehend criminals operating on our waters and the high seas.”
This initiative aims to reduce security challenges in the marine environment and ensure safer waterways. The minister’s support underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging advanced technological solutions for national security.
Engr. Fatai Adeyemi, NIMASA’s Executive Director of Operations, hailed the minister’s visit as a testament to the government’s dedication to maritime security. “It shows the seriousness of our government in ensuring our waterways are secure,” Adeyemi remarked. “The minister’s visit allows him to see firsthand how he can support us further. Combining C4i with Falcon Eye will undoubtedly enhance our capabilities and improve security.”
Reflecting on the progress made in maritime security, Adeyemi noted, “We have come far. Previously, we had pirate activities, but in the past two years, those activities have dropped to zero. We have done very well and aim to maintain this success.”
Jubrin Abba, NIMASA’s Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Service, praised the proposed integration of Falcon Eye and C4i. “The brief given to the minister helped him understands the C4i system’s capabilities,” Abba said. “Integrating Falcon Eye with C4i, as suggested by the minister, is a step in the right direction and will significantly enhance our marine environment’s security.”
Abba also highlighted the potential economic benefits of this collaboration, stating, “This partnership with the Nigerian Navy will improve capital trade in Nigeria. Currently, we have many vessels operating, and with enhanced security, trade activities will thrive even more.”
The visit underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening maritime security through strategic collaboration and advanced technological integration. This proposed policy of integrating the Falcon Eye and C4i systems represents a proactive approach to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests and promoting economic stability.
