As part of activities marking the 2025 World Oceans Day Celebration, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Wednesday June 4th partnered with the Lekan Bakare Foundation to commemorate World Oceans Day 2025 at Ago Egun, Makoko, with a focus on promoting safer waterways and sustainable fishing practices.
The event, themed “Strengthening Community Compliance for Safer Waterways and Sustainable Fishing,” featured enlightening lectures and expert insights from key stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture.
The partnership highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting marine safety and sustainability. By working together, LASWA and the Lekan Bakare Foundation aim to create a safer and more environmentally conscious community.
As part of the event, LASWA donated life jackets to local fishermen to promote safe practices during daily fishing and water transportation activities. This gesture underscores the agency’s commitment to enhancing safety on Lagos inland waterways.
The event provided a platform for stakeholders to share expert insights and practical knowledge tailored to the unique needs of the Ago Egun community. The lectures and interactive sessions aimed to educate residents on best practices in marine safety and ecological preservation.
