The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has halted the implementation of newly approved shipping tariffs, directing all shipping lines and their respective agents to immediately suspend the increase and revert to previous rates.
According to a statement signed by the management, the directive was issued in line with the Council’s statutory mandate as the economic regulator of the port and shipping sector.
The Council said the decision followed ongoing engagements with key stakeholders and was in response to concerns over the timing, structure, and potential impact of the tariffs on port users and the broader logistics value chain.
To safeguard fair competition, ensure transparency, and maintain sector stability, the NSC stated that it was necessary to halt the implementation pending the conclusion of comprehensive consultations and a regulatory review.
The statement further directed all affected operators to revert to and strictly apply the tariff regime in place prior to the increase, warning that any deviation would constitute a breach of regulatory compliance and would attract appropriate sanctions in line with extant laws and regulations.
The Council assured stakeholders that a final decision would be communicated after the conclusion of consultations and internal review processes.
It reaffirmed its commitment to effective economic regulation, the protection of cargo interests, and the promotion of an efficient and equitable maritime transport system, urging all operators to ensure strict and immediate compliance.
