The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has taken the lead in advocating for greater women inclusion in Nigeria’s maritime sector as stakeholders gathered on Thursday in Lagos to celebrate International Women’s Day 2026.
The event highlighted the urgent need to expand opportunities for women across maritime and logistics industries.

Speaking at the celebration, NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola encouraged women to explore careers, professional roles, and investments within the maritime sector, describing it as one of Nigeria’s most promising yet underutilized economic areas.
Mobereola noted that the maritime industry offers a wide range of career, professional and investment opportunities. He added that the agency is deliberately creating pathways that will enable more women to advance into leadership positions.
According to him, women already hold several key leadership roles within the agency due to their competence and efficiency. He reaffirmed NIMASA’s commitment to ensuring fair representation for women in employment while accelerating their participation at management levels.
“The marine sector has enormous potential and presents a great opportunity for women to advance professionally and take on leadership roles,” he said, noting that women already hold key positions within the agency.
Ms. Funke Ani, Chairman of the Planning Committee, explained the event’s theme, “Give Compliance to Gain Longevity: Navigating Nigeria’s Tax Reform Opportunities for Women in Shipping and Global Trade,” emphasizing that regulatory compliance is a pathway to credibility, resilience, and long-term business success.
She urged women in maritime logistics, port operations, and international trade to leverage emerging reforms through knowledge and strategic compliance.
Representing WIMOWCA Nigeria, Ms. Chioma Okonkwo highlighted the increasing impact of women in maritime administration, seafaring, ship surveying, port management, marine engineering, maritime law, and entrepreneurship.
Ms. Abimbola Olajide, President of WIMA Nigeria, noted that the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” reflects women’s sacrifices and commitment in building stronger institutions and economies.
Mrs. Aisha Bello, Chairperson of WiLAT Nigeria, stressed leadership, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility as vital tools for advancing women in logistics and transport sectors. She emphasized the role of professional associations in building capacity and creating career pathways for women.
The stakeholders concluded that stronger collaboration between government agencies, professional associations, and industry players is essential to expanding opportunities and ensuring meaningful participation of women in Nigeria’s maritime economy.
