The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has partnered with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation (AALF) to promote leadership development, youth empowerment and sustainable growth within Lagos State’s blue economy.
The partnership was formalised during a courtesy visit by officials of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation to LASWA headquarters in Lagos, where both organisations agreed to collaborate on initiatives that will equip young Nigerians with leadership skills while promoting environmental responsibility and community development.
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said strategic partnerships remain essential to achieving sustainable development in the waterways sector.
He noted that the continued growth of the blue economy depends not only on infrastructure and investment but also on developing competent leaders who can drive innovation and inspire positive change in waterfront communities.
According to him, the collaboration with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation will create opportunities for young people to acquire practical knowledge, leadership skills and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to the development of Lagos State’s maritime and waterways sector.
“Our vision for the blue economy can only be achieved through strong partnerships, active community participation and deliberate investment in people,” Emmanuel said, adding that the initiative would strengthen leadership excellence and deliver lasting benefits to communities across the state’s waterways.
Under the partnership, LASWA and the Foundation will jointly organise leadership development programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, environmental awareness campaigns, community outreach projects and knowledge-sharing engagements aimed at preparing the next generation of leaders.
The initiative will also promote civic responsibility, innovation and community-driven solutions while supporting safer, cleaner and more sustainable waterways.
Director of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation, Ayo Akindele, described the partnership as an important step towards investing in Africa’s future through leadership development.
He said meaningful progress can only be achieved when government institutions and private organisations work together to nurture young people with the right skills, values and opportunities.
“Leadership is one of Africa’s greatest assets, and developing future leaders requires collective effort,” Akindele said. “Our collaboration with LASWA will help empower young people with the knowledge, exposure and mindset needed to drive sustainable development in Lagos, Nigeria and across the continent.”
Stakeholders at the meeting observed that building leadership capacity alongside promoting environmental sustainability would play a vital role in unlocking the enormous opportunities within Lagos State’s blue economy.
They also stressed the importance of increasing public awareness of environmental protection, responsible waterways management and inclusive development in coastal and riverine communities.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to implementing impactful programmes that will strengthen leadership, encourage community participation, promote environmental sustainability and enhance safety across Lagos waterways.
The partnership represents another milestone in LASWA’s efforts to deepen stakeholder engagement and forge strategic alliances that support the Lagos State Government’s vision of transforming the state’s waterways into a major driver of economic growth, job creation and sustainable development.
