The Nigerian Navy Secondary School (NNSS), Abeokuta, Ogun State, has joined Nigerians across the country in celebrating Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, with the school highlighting the important role of young Nigerians in shaping the nation’s future.

The celebration, held at the school, brought together students, staff and members of the school community in a display of patriotism, discipline and national pride, as the institution reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence.
With the theme “Raising Future Leaders,” the Independence Day celebration placed the development of responsible, disciplined, and patriotic young Nigerians at the center of the school’s message to mark the occasion.
The event featured students in their school and ceremonial outfits, while cadets participated in activities that reflected the values of discipline, leadership, patriotism and service which the Nigerian Navy Secondary School seeks to instil in its students.

Addressing the significance of the celebration, the Commandant of the School,Captain O. A. Adesiyan said Independence Day was not only an occasion to celebrate Nigeria’s nationhood but also an opportunity to reflect on the hopes, aspirations, and responsibilities of the younger generation.
According to Adesiyan, the future of Nigeria is closely linked to the quality of education, values, and leadership developed among its young people, stressing the importance of preparing them adequately for the responsibilities ahead.

She noted that the younger generation would play a significant role in determining the direction of the country in the years ahead and urged students to embrace discipline, responsibility, patriotism and a strong sense of service to the nation.
The Commandant emphasised the need to create an environment where young Nigerians can develop their talents, acquire relevant knowledge, and build the character required to contribute positively to national development.
She said the responsibility of building a better Nigeria extends beyond government and institutions, noting that young people must also be prepared to contribute meaningfully to society through their conduct, education, leadership and commitment to national development.
The celebration, therefore, served not only as an Independence Day event but also as an opportunity to remind students of their responsibilities as future leaders and citizens.
For the students, the occasion provided an opportunity to demonstrate their sense of belonging to the Nigerian nation while reflecting on the significance of independence and the sacrifices that have shaped the country’s journey over the years.

The school’s emphasis on leadership development is consistent with its educational mandate of providing academic training while instilling discipline, character, and values associated with responsible citizenship.
Through its academic and extracurricular activities, NNSS Abeokuta continues to expose students to experiences and values designed to prepare them for future responsibilities in different fields of endeavour.
The Independence Day celebration also reinforced the school’s belief that Nigeria’s development is closely connected to the development and empowerment of its young people.
As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the school’s message underscores the importance of giving young Nigerians the education, guidance, opportunities, and values needed to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
The celebration concluded on a note of hope and optimism, with NNSS Abeokuta extending its Independence Day greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad.

The school also reaffirmed its commitment to raising young Nigerians who will uphold the values of discipline, patriotism, leadership, and service while contributing meaningfully to the development and progress of the nation.
