The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has appointed former Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Complaints Unit chief, Dr. Bashir Ambi-Mohammed, as its new Head of Communications and Advertising.

The appointment is expected to strengthen the institute’s strategic communication efforts as it continues to advance maritime capacity development, policy advocacy, research and stakeholder engagement within Nigeria’s growing blue economy sector.

Dr. Ambi-Mohammed joins IMION after a distinguished 26-year career at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, where he played a pivotal role in protecting the interests of shippers and other stakeholders in the nation’s transport and logistics industry.

During his tenure as Head of the Complaints Unit, he spearheaded dispute resolution initiatives that reportedly saved the Nigerian economy about ₦4.8 billion through effective complaints management, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms and consumer protection interventions.

He also contributed significantly to information dissemination and transparency within the maritime industry as the pioneer chairman of the editorial board of the NSC Complaints Newsletter.

Widely respected across the transport and maritime sectors, Dr. Ambi-Mohammed has earned recognition for his professionalism, integrity and commitment to ethical standards. His achievements have attracted several awards, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award, the NSC Chief Executive Officer Award and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International President’s Award.

Academically, he holds a Master’s degree in International Transport from Cardiff Business School, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Lead City University, Ibadan.

An expert in multimodal transportation covering maritime, road, rail and aviation sectors, Dr. Ambi-Mohammed is expected to bring his extensive experience in transport administration, corporate communications and media technology to bear in his new role.

Industry stakeholders believe his appointment will further enhance IMION’s visibility and strengthen collaboration with key players in the maritime industry while supporting the institute’s mission of developing world-class maritime professionals and promoting sustainable growth within Nigeria’s blue economy.
