The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of contraband goods valued at N3.22 billion and the generation of N28.5 billion in revenue between March and May 2026.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Command headquarters in Ibadan on Wednesday, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs WM Adewole, said the achievements reflected the Command’s commitment to revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations, and trade facilitation.
According to him, the N28.5 billion collected during the three-month period represents an 8 per cent increase compared to the N26.23 billion generated within the same period in 2025.
Adewole attributed the growth to improved compliance among traders, enhanced automation of Customs processes, and intensified efforts to block revenue leakages.
On anti-smuggling activities, the Controller disclosed that the Command recorded seizures with a cumulative Duty Paid Value of N3,221,843,672. He noted that the interceptions were made through intelligence-driven operations and close collaboration with other security agencies.
Among the major seizures were three pump-action rifles intercepted during a recent operation. Adewole revealed that three suspects connected to the firearms had been taken into custody and are currently under investigation.
He said the Customs Intelligence Unit, Customs Police Unit, and Legal Unit are working together to uncover the full network behind the illegal shipment and identify other accomplices.
In another operation carried out jointly with the Amotekun Corps in Ibadan, officers arrested a suspect accused of defrauding members of the public by falsely promising them employment opportunities in the Nigeria Customs Service in exchange for money.
The Controller stressed that recruitment into the Service is transparent, merit-based, and conducted strictly through official channels, warning Nigerians to be wary of individuals claiming to offer employment slots for financial gratification.
He explained that the Command’s enforcement activities are aimed at protecting local industries, safeguarding government revenue, and preventing dangerous items from finding their way into society.
Adewole stated that the Command remains fully aligned with the reform agenda of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, focusing on revenue generation, suppression of smuggling, and the facilitation of legitimate trade.
As part of efforts to encourage professionalism and excellence, the Command also presented Commendation Awards to officers who distinguished themselves through exceptional performance, integrity, and dedication to duty.
The Acting Controller commended sister security agencies, members of the business community, and media practitioners for their continued support and cooperation, describing partnership as critical to the successful execution of the Command’s responsibilities.
He assured residents and stakeholders that the Oyo/Osun Area Command would sustain its efforts to combat smuggling, strengthen national security, and contribute to economic growth across the South-West region.
