The Nigerian maritime journalism landscape has taken a significant leap forward with the emergence of the Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ), a coalition of all maritime journalists’ associations in the country.
The NNMJ, which brings together various maritime journalists’ beat associations, aims to promote unity and cohesion among its members while advocating for their welfare and interests. The coalition is comprised of members from The League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Association of Nigeria (MARAN), The Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), and other maritime journalists not affiliated with any association.
According to Elder Dele Aderibigbe, Chairman of the NNMJ, the coalition is seeking the support of all journalists, government agencies, parastatals, and maritime critical stakeholders to achieve its objectives. A key objective of the NNMJ is to elevate the status of maritime journalists, who have often been regarded as orphans in the journalism community. The coalition hopes to achieve this by fostering a stronger sense of unity and purpose among its members.
