Nigeria has made a significant comeback to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, regaining its seat after a 14-year absence. The country’s successful bid, led by the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, was secured through a decisive victory in the Category C election for the 2026-2027 biennium. This development marks a major milestone for Nigeria, as it restores the country’s position among nations shaping global maritime policies.
The IMO Council election, held during the IMO General Assembly in London on November 28, was the culmination of over a year’s worth of strategic diplomatic engagements across continents. Minister Oyetola described the outcome as a significant affirmation of international confidence in Nigeria’s maritime reforms and security efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized that the election was an endorsement of President Tinubu’s vision for developing the marine and blue economy sector as a major contributor to national growth.
Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council is expected to strengthen the country’s maritime posture, open avenues for technical support, enhance investor confidence, and reinforce its leadership role within the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s renewed commitment to global maritime governance was demonstrated through repeated consultations with countries and maritime blocs. Minister Oyetola expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for providing the necessary support throughout the campaign, enabling Nigeria to compete effectively in the highly contested election cycle.
The IMO Council comprises 40 member states, with 20 seats allocated to Category C, which includes countries with special interests in maritime transport and navigation. Nigeria joins other nations elected into this category, including Bahamas, Belgium, Cyprus, Chile, Egypt, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and South Africa. The election also saw countries elected into Categories A and B, representing the world’s biggest providers of shipping services and nations with the largest interests in international seaborne trade, respectively.
Oyetola reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to serve with integrity and commitment, adding that the government remains focused on unlocking the full potential of the blue economy for national development. He noted that the opportunity places a responsibility on Nigeria to deepen reforms and strengthen institutions to ensure the country fully maximizes the benefits of its restored position in the Council. The Minister emphasized that Nigeria must now consolidate the confidence earned by the victory, pledging to work methodically to deliver on the country’s maritime aspirations.
The successful bid was made possible through the efforts of the Technical Committee of Experts, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola. The team coordinated the process that delivered the victory, demonstrating Nigeria’s capability to work collaboratively and effectively in a highly competitive environment.
