The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to advancing maritime decarbonisation, promoting green shipping practices, and strengthening marine environmental protection in line with global efforts to build a more sustainable maritime industry.
Mobereola made the commitment during a strategic meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of Natural Eco Capital Limited, Dr. Eugene Itua, where both parties discussed initiatives designed to accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a cleaner and environmentally sustainable maritime sector.
A key focus of the engagement was the presentation of the Nigerian Green Shipping Excellence Programme (NGSEP) and the Green Maritime Recognition Scheme (GMRS). According to Itua, the initiatives are aimed at driving maritime decarbonisation, encouraging the adoption of cleaner technologies, attracting climate-related investments, and positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in sustainable shipping.
Responding, the NIMASA Director-General commended the proposals, stressing that strong partnerships between the public and private sectors are essential to achieving the country’s environmental sustainability goals.
He noted that practical, innovative and collaborative approaches remain critical to tackling climate change, protecting the marine environment, and improving the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime industry in the global shipping space.
Mobereola further stated that NIMASA remains committed to supporting initiatives that align with international environmental standards while fostering the sustainable development of Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.
The proposed programmes are expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon maritime sector, reinforcing the country’s commitment to green shipping and sustainable economic growth.
