  Rear Admiral Idi Abbas , on Thursday  assumed office as the new Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) ,Nigerian Navy with a clear vision to strengthen maritime security, enhance the navy’s operational capability, and combat maritime crimes within the nation’s territorial waters.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Abuja, Abbas acknowledged the significant progress made by the navy, but also noted that the nation’s maritime domain still faces threats such as crude oil theft, sea robbery, illegal bunkering, Illegal Unreported Unregulated fishing, and drug trafficking.

A Comprehensive Approach to Maritime SecurityTo address these challenges, Abbas emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that leverages technology, prioritizes training and personnel welfare, and fosters inter-agency synergy, regional and international collaboration.

He noted that the navy will focus on strengthening maritime security and combating illegalities, with a clear and actionable strategic approach that will guide his tenure.

The Imperative of Jointness and Cooperation, CNS  highlighted the importance of jointness with sister services and close cooperation with relevant security agencies in the conduct of operations. He emphasized that the navy will work closely with other security agencies to tackle the pervasive security threats confronting the nation.

This approach, he noted, will enable the navy to effectively combat maritime crimes and protect the nation’s economic lifeline.A Commitment to Excellence and ServiceAbbas described his appointment as a privilege and expressed gratitude to the President for the trust bestowed upon him to lead the navy.

Abbas vowed to discharge his duties with dedication, integrity, and loyalty to the nation. He also commended his predecessor, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for laying a solid foundation for continued progress in the navy.

Protecting the Nation’s Economic LifelineThe maritime domain, Naval Chief noted, is the nation’s economic lifeline, and the navy is fully committed to safeguarding it for national prosperity.

He emphasized that the navy will work tirelessly to ensure that the nation’s waters are safe for legitimate commerce and the exploration of the blue economy.Leading from the FrontAbbas promised to lead from the front and ensure that officers’ welfare remains top priority.

Abbas demanded the highest standards of discipline and moral conduct from every naval personnel, emphasizing that this is essential for the navy to maintain its professional standards.A

He emphasized that the navy will be guided by its core values of discipline, integrity, professionalism, and teamwork, and will work to build a culture of excellence and service.
