The Nigerian Navy marked a significant milestone on Friday, celebrating its 69th anniversary with a unique initiative that brought together over 300 civilians, including primary school pupils, for a sea trip aboard the, Nigeria Navy Ship, NNS KADA.
This event was part of the Navy’s efforts to strengthen civil-military relationships and provide a glimpse into its operations.
The sea trip, which took place on the Lagos waters, was a resounding success, with participants expressing their appreciation for the Navy’s vital role in national security.
The event was attended by families and friends who thronged the NNS BEECROFT Jetty at the Naval Base in Apapa, Lagos, eager to experience naval operations firsthand.
The NNS KADA, which set sail around 9:00 am, took the civilian guests on a three-hour tour of the Lagos waters, showcasing the ocean view from the Lagos Anchorage and back to base in Apapa. Participants were treated to music on board, and many expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to experience naval operations up close.
Speaking to newsmen on board the NNS KADA, the Fleet Commander, Western Fleet, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Mohamed-Katsina, emphasized the significance of the sea trip in commemorating the Navy’s 69th year.
He explained that inviting civilians onboard was a direct reflection of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala’s strategic guidance on civil-military relations.
Rear Admiral Mohamed-Katsina highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability to the public, whose taxes fund the Navy’s operations.
He stated, “This is one of the cardinal objectives and the strategic guidance of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, that’s civil-military relationship because the civilians are the ones that pay the tax in which the nation uses in buying all the assets that Nigerian Navy utilizes.

“The NNS KADA, capable of accommodating as many as 1,000 individuals, provided a memorable experience for all who participated in the anniversary celebration. The event was a testament to the Navy’s commitment to building bridges with the civilian population and showcasing its operations.
“The Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary celebration is a week-long event, culminating in a sunset ceremony on Sunday. The sea trip was just one of the many activities planned to mark this significant milestone.
“The Nigerian Navy’s initiative to take civilians on a sea trip is a commendable effort to foster stronger civil-military relationships. The event was a success, and the Navy’s commitment to transparency and accountability is evident in its efforts to engage with the public” he said.
