The President of the Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN), Mr Emmanuel Maiguwa, has proposed measures to ensure safe night travel on Nigeria’s waterways.

Mr Maiguwa, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Bricks Murstern Mattoni Limited, emphasized that extending economic activities into the night can stimulate the economy, and it’s possible to do so safely with proper measures in place.
MASPAN President stressed that the government should focus on ensuring safety rather than imposing blanket bans. He believes that this approach will allow the industry to grow while minimizing risks.
Maiguwa listed key requirements for safe night navigation, including seaworthy boats, trained crew, and well-marked navigable ways. He stressed that these measures are necessary to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of passengers.
He also clarified that life jackets are not a solution to preventing marine accidents, but rather a means to minimize loss of life.
Maiguwa pointed out that some recent accidents have shown bodies with life jackets, highlighting the need for more effective safety measures.
According to Mr Maiguwa, technology can provide solutions to the challenges facing the industry. He believes that with the right approach, it’s possible to safely navigate Nigeria’s waterways at night, just like in other parts of the world.
The MASPAN President called for the implementation of the Small Crafts regulations in the Marine and Blue Policy. He noted that this policy aspect has already been taken care of, and it’s time to move to the strategy and operations phase.
Maiguwa also.emphasized the need for a balanced approach that prioritizes safety while promoting economic growth. He believes that with the right measures in place, Nigeria’s waterways can be safe and efficient, supporting the country’s economic development.
