The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals and jetties in Lagos State as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with waterways safety regulations and improve operational standards.
According to a statement signed by the Corporate Communications Department of LASWA, the inspection campaign covered several terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut, with primary focus placed on vessel seaworthiness and life jacket safety compliance.
The statement disclosed that during the enforcement exercise, 120 damaged life jackets were confiscated and removed from circulation to prevent safety risks on the waterways. LASWA explained that the action was taken to eliminate substandard safety equipment and ensure strict adherence to approved operational standards across all waterways activities in the state.
According to the statement signed by the Corporate Communications Department, the Authority identified inconsistent compliance among operators during the inspections. While many vessels met the required safety standards, some were found to require repairs and upgrades before attaining full seaworthiness. LASWA stressed that compliance with safety regulations, particularly concerning vessel conditions and the use of certified and functional life jackets, remains mandatory for all operators.
The statement further noted that enforcement and monitoring operations would continue across ferry terminals and jetties to guarantee total compliance with waterways safety regulations. Operators were reminded of their legal responsibility to maintain seaworthy vessels and provide approved life jackets for passengers at all times.
