The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unveiled the Omi-Eko Project, a multi-billion-naira initiative aimed at revolutionissng water transportation in Lagos State and easing the city’s chronic road congestion.

The Omi-Eko Project marks a new chapter in Lagos’s history, one that redefines the state’s relationship with its waterways through innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Lagos is “choosing to create history anew” by returning to its aquatic roots.
The governor noted that the city’s lagoon and creeks have long defined its identity, and it is time to harness the potential of these waterways to improve the lives of residents. With Omi-Eko, the governor emphasized that the state is not only lifting boats but also lifting lives, businesses, and communities.
The Omi-Eko Project is a critical component of the Lagos Modal Transportation System, which aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated transportation network for the state. The project involves the development of a modern and efficient water transportation system, including the construction of new terminals, jetties, and ferries.
The governor highlighted the achievements of his administration across all transport sectors, including the expansion of the BRT network, the completion of the Lagos Blue Line, and progress on the Red Line Rail. With Omi-Eko, the governor said the state is unlocking the full potential of its inland waterways, bringing the final piece of the Lagos Modal Transportation System to life.
The Omi-Eko Project is being jointly funded by European partners under the “Team Europe” initiative, a collaboration between the EU, AFD, and EIB to support sustainable development in Nigeria.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on Lagos’s transportation system, easing road congestion and providing a more efficient and sustainable mode of transportation for residents. The governor expressed his gratitude to the European partners for their support, emphasizing that the project would not have been possible without their collaboration.
