The Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has taken a significant step towards enhancing the health and well-being of its officers.
In a bid to boost their operational readiness and overall morale, the Command has reinstated routine medical check-ups and mandatory weekly fitness exercises. This initiative, spearheaded by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Chidi Chukwumeziri Nwokorie, aims to promote a work-life balance within the Service.
The first phase of the program was flagged off on Thursday, 19 June 2025, at the Command’s premises in Birnin Kebbi. Comptroller Nwokorie emphasized the importance of regular health checks and physical fitness as key components in maintaining the alertness and effectiveness
required for Customs duties. He noted that the exercise is not meant to be seen as a burden or an obligation imposed on officers, but rather as a proactive measure to safeguard their health.
The Customs boss revealed that henceforth, medical examinations will be conducted fortnightly, while physical exercise sessions will be held every week without fail. The objective is to strengthen the resilience, agility, and general health of personnel tasked with enforcing Nigeria’s trade laws and combating illicit smuggling activities across the nation’s borders.

This initiative is a welcome development, considering the demanding nature of Customs work. Officers are often required to work in challenging environments, and their health and well-being are crucial to the success of their duties. By prioritizing their health, the Kebbi Customs Command is ensuring that its officers are equipped to handle the demands of their job.
The activities concluded with officers engaging in various forms of sports and recreational games, reinforcing camaraderie and team spirit within the Command. This is essential for building a cohesive team that can work together effectively to achieve its goals.
The Kebbi Command’s renewed focus on health and morale comes at a time when security agencies are under pressure to meet growing national expectations for border security and anti-smuggling enforcement. By prioritizing the health and well-being of its officers, the Command is demonstrating its commitment to their success.

The initiative has been well-received by officers, who appreciate the Command’s efforts to promote their health and well-being. This is a testament to the leadership of Comptroller Nwokorie, who has shown a commitment to the welfare of his officers.
The Kebbi Customs Command’s initiative serves as a model for other security agencies. By prioritizing the health and well-being of officers, agencies can improve their performance and overall effectiveness.
In conclusion, the Kebbi Customs Command’s health and fitness initiative is a step in the right direction. By prioritizing the health and well-being of its officers, the Command is ensuring that they are equipped to handle the demands of their job and contribute to the success of the Nigeria Customs Service.
