The Lagos State Government has unveiled the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative aimed at ensuring that officers of the Nigeria Police Force are fit and healthy, while doing their work.

The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Transportation and Logistics, Mr Hassan Adekoya, who initiated the programme, made this known on Friday in Lagos.

Adekoya noted that the state government was targeting 1,000 police officers benefitting from the Sanwo-Olu Police Care Initiative.

“We are here because of the good heart of Mr Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s initiative on health and welfare packages in Lagos.

“We started with the Drivers’ Care Initiative and today, we have gone beyond drivers and the governor extended it to the Nigeria Police.

“For the drivers, Mr Governor targeted reaching out to 10,000, but for the Nigeria Police, he is targeting 1,000 officers,” he said.

The governor’s aide said that the Nigeria Police are the backbone of the country’s security, and so the need to ensure that they are fit to carry out their duties.

He added the initiative was also to complement what the Inspector General of Police (I.G) and the Commissioner of Police had been doing currently as regards the welfare of the officers.

A beneficiary, Inspector Gloria Uchenna, described the initiative as a good one that would help her and other beneficiaries to do their jobs effectively.

“My job is in the office, and this entails writing and making use of the computers which is always a strain on the eyes.

“This glasses given to me will go a long way in ensuring that I work well and I really appreciate the gesture from both the I.G and the governor,” she said.

The initiative involved free eye test and corrective glasses for officers, as well as health check.
